2 Data Sheet Nautica 4000
Benefits
Extends Connectivity
The Nautica 4000’s flexible-access
design combines router and dial access
capabilities,providing network con-
nections for multiple analog dial-up,
digital dial-up,and digital leased lines.
Nautica 4000 offers direct online con-
nectivity with Point-to-Point Protocol
(PPP) dial access to internetworks for
clients and remote LANs,as well as
dedicated or dial connectivity into a
WAN backbone or Internet. Bay Net-
works adherence to standards allows
connectivity and interoperability for
Transmission Control Protocol/IP
(TCP/IP),IPX,and bridged networks
over ISDN,Frame Relay,and leased
lines in multivendor environments.
Offers Integrated Backbone
Access Over a Variety of
Interfaces
The Nautica 4000 gives users a variety
of options for connecting to a local or
remote backbone network. Switches
or backbone routers can be accessed
via an Attachment User Interface (AUI)
or 10BASE-T port at up to 10 Mbps;
a high-speed serial interface that
provides dedicated connections using
Frame Relay or PPP at up to 2.044
Mbps (V.35,X.21);or ISDN BRI with
integrated “S/T”or “U”interfaces to
make connections directly to the car-
rier. The Nautica 4000 also supports
V.24/RS-232 interfaces,supporting the
attachment of asynchronous devices
such as serially attached modems.
Ensures Network Performance
and Availability
The Nautica 4000 router’s Reduced
Instruction Set Computer (RISC)-based
multiprocessor architecture offers best-
in-class performance. High filtering
rates of 14,880 and forwarding perfor-
mance of 10,000 packets per second
(pps) allow the Nautica 4000 to meet
the most demanding throughput
requirements. What’s more,the Nautica
4000’s Dial-on-Demand,Dial- Around-
Dead Site (DADS),and Bandwidth-on-
Demand features ensure network avail-
ability during periods of dislocation
and high traffic congestion,offering
protection against business disruption
in the event of a discontinuity in the
selected data path. Nautica 4000s can
be configured by a wide array of local
and remote SNMP-based management
platforms,which allow for easy config-
uration and quick problem resolution.
Protects Investment
The Nautica 4000’s modular design
provides the performance and network
interfaces for network flexibility and
growth. The Nautica 4000 is compati-
ble with Bay Networks Adapteon
5399
remote access concentrator (RAC)
module, Adapteon 8000 RAC,Nautica
200,CLAM
, BayStack
Access Node
(AN
®
),BayStack Access Node Hub
(ANH
), Access Stack Node (ASN
),
Backbone Link Node (BLN
®
),Backbone
Concentrator Node (BCN
®
),and Marlin
routers. The Nautica 4000 can interop-
erate with third-party vendors equip-
ment using PPP,Multilink PPP (MP),
Bandwidth Allocation Control Protocol
(BACP),Hifn data compression,Com-
pression Control Protocol (CCP),and
Microsoft Point-to-Point Compression
(MPPC).
Hardware Features
High-Performance Processor
The high-performance,highly flexible
Nautica 4000 routers feature:
MIPS 33000,MC68360,and
MC68302 microprocessors for
I/O interface activity
Filtering rate of 14,880 pps
Forwarding performance that
exceeds 10,000 pps
Each Nautica 4000 can contain 4 to
32 megabytes (MB) Dynamic Random
Access Memory (DRAM) and 1.5 MB
Flash memory. Software image and
configuration files can be downloaded
remotely to the Flash memory,
simplifying upgrades and fault
recovery procedures.
Ethernet The Nautica 4000 routers
has a 10BASE-T (RJ-45) connector and
one AUI connector for a choice of
connectivity. The interface supports
IEEE 802.3 and Version 1.0/2.0
Ethernet frame formats.
Synchronous The Synchronous WAN
interface supports clocking rates of up
to 2.044 Mbps. It is available config-
ured with V.11/X.21,V.24/RS-232,or V.35
physical interfaces for support of Frame
Relay or leased line services. The V.24
interface can also connect to an analog
modem for public-switched telephone
network (PSTN) dial-up routing.
Integrated Modems Optional inte-
grated V.34 modems are available with
the Nautica 4000. The modems enable
calls originating on an analog PSTN
service to be terminated by the Nautica
4000. Up to 16 simultaneous connec-
tions can be made with two optional
4-port modem modules,and two 4-port
expansion modules.
ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI)
The Nautica 4000 provides an inte-
grated,high-performance solution for
companies using dial services with up
to eight ISDN BRI interfaces. Each
interface has two 64 Kbps B-channels
for data and one 16 Kbps D-channel for
signaling. Each ISDN BRI features an
MC68302 microprocessor. The ISDN
BRI connector is a RJ-45.
